Canadian Fellowship Programs

MIGS Fellowship Program of the Month - July 2020

University of Toronto – St. Joseph’s Health Centre

Our fellowship is a 1 year program that offers a large surgical volume of diverse experiences treating complex benign gynecologic conditions via laparoscopy, laparotomy and hysteroscopy. Fellows spend 3-4 days a week in the OR performing cases such as LASER resection of severe endometriosis, total and subtotal laparoscopic hysterectomies, laparoscopic myomectomy with in-bag morcellation, laparoscopic and vaginal anti-incontinence and anti-prolapse surgeries, and hysteroscopic septoplasties. Fellows will be exposed to a wide variety of challenging surgical scenarios. With graduated responsibilities over the course of the year, they will ultimately be able to successfully complete cases with the assistance of a senior OBGYN resident.

In addition to their surgical experience, fellows will spend 1-2 days a week in MIS clinics, learning the nuances of medical treatment of patients both pre- and post-operatively. As well, they will facilitate the multidisciplinary and multifaceted approach to the management of chronic pelvic pain. The pursuit of academic/education projects is also encouraged during this time, with the aim to present at a major national or international conference. In addition, fellows will act as role models and mentors to OBGYN residents and medical students.

St. Joseph’s Health Centre is a community-based teaching institution in the west end of Toronto that is affiliated with the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Toronto. It neighbours High Park, the large and beautiful natural park and recreational area that features sporting facilities, dog parks, playgrounds, a zoo, and annual viewings of the delicate pink flowers of the Sakura Cherry Blossoms. The hospital is also situated in Roncevalles Village, a delightful mix of shops, restaurants and gardens, and near the scenic Humber Bay waterfront and famous Ontario Place.
